New Rabbit Essential:
Here is a quick checklist of all the items you’ll need right away in
order to take care of your pet rabbit.
#1: A CAGE
A cage that's the right size for your new pet rabbit, and that is
strong enough to protect it from predators. Much more
information is available on the rabbit cage page.
Checklist #2: Rabbit Food
Get some high-quality commercial rabbit pellets to start with
(make sure the bag is fresher than 6 months old when you buy
it). Feed young bunnies all the pellets they want (free-fed)
and Grass hay every day. See Feeding rabbits on the rabbit
care page for more information on how to feed as your bunny
grows up. See the plants list for plants that are safe for you
bunny to munch on.
Checklist #3: Get a feed container
A heavy crock, a crock that hooks to the wire or a J-Feeder
work great. Whatever you use, work out a way to secure the
container to the hutch or cage so the rabbit won’t pull on it, fling
feed everywhere, or simply tip it over. Less waste means less
money spent and less waste.
Checklist #4: Get A Water Container
Fresh water is probably a rabbit's most crucial need, so give
them as much fresh water as they can possibly want or
consume, every day. You can supply water in a crock, coop
cup, or water bottle.
Checklist #5: A litter box
This is essential if you plan to keep your rabbit in the house
and would like to have him/her out of the cage to play. Rabbits
can easily be litter-box trained. Better to use a high sided litter
box with high sides because the high-sides keep the shavings
from scattering. The safest thing to use as litter in the box is
hay. If you use anything else, be sure the bun is not eating
something that the rabbit shouldn't eat. See litter box training
page for more information on this subject.
Checklist #6 Cleaning Supplies:
Get some basic cleaning supplies if you don't already have
some. You will need a bottle of white vinegar as well. See the
cleaning page for expanded instructions on cleaning a rabbit
cage.
Checklist #7: Bunny Proofing..
Don't let your bunny chew any electrical cords! This is a critical
consideration only if you plan on giving your rabbit the run of
the house. Read the rabbit proofing your home page for more
information.
Checklist #8 Toys
Hand made or store bought toys are a necessary part of a
healthy, happy bunny life. See the web page on toys for more
information. Toys relieve stress and boredom.
